Privacy policy
Gleaner is published by Foldwell ("we"). This policy explains what Gleaner does with your data.
In short: Gleaner works inside your browser. It reads a web page only when you click its toolbar button, and it does not send anything about the pages you visit, or the files you find, to us or anyone else. The only outside service it talks to is Gumroad, to check your license key if you have bought Gleaner Pro.
What Gleaner does with the pages you open it on
When you click the Gleaner button, it looks through the current tab for images, videos, audio files and links to documents, and shows them to you. If auto-scroll is on, it scrolls the page to load more images and then returns you to where you were. This happens on your device. The list of files is not stored on any server and is not sent anywhere.
When you download files, your browser fetches them directly from the websites that host them, as if you had saved them yourself. Gleaner Pro's ZIP feature does the same, then packs the files into one archive on your device.
What is stored, and where
| Data | Where it's kept | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your settings (default folder, minimum size, auto-scroll) | Chrome's extension storage on your device (synced by Chrome if you use Chrome sync) | To remember your preferences |
| Filters and selections for an open tab | Chrome's session storage on your device; cleared when you close the browser | So reopening the popup keeps your choices |
| A count of successful downloads | Chrome's extension storage on your device | To ask for a review once, after your fifth download |
| Your Gleaner Pro license key, if you enter one, and when it was last checked | Chrome's extension storage on your device | To unlock Pro features, including offline for up to 7 days (see below) |
Uninstalling Gleaner removes everything it stored in your browser.
Payments
Gleaner Pro is sold through Gumroad, which processes the payment as the seller of record. Checkout happens on Gumroad's own web pages; Gleaner never sees your card details. Gumroad gives you a license key, which you paste into Gleaner. Gleaner then sends that key, with Gleaner's product ID, to Gumroad's license service to check that the purchase is valid and was not refunded, and checks it again about twice a day while you use Pro features. Gleaner does not keep the email address or other purchase details that Gumroad's answer contains. Gumroad's own privacy policy covers the information you give it at checkout. You can remove the key from Gleaner at any time on its Settings page. If you never enter a license key, Gleaner never contacts Gumroad.
Permissions
- Active tab and scripting: to read the current page, only after you click the Gleaner button.
- Downloads: to save the files you select.
- Storage: for the data in the table above.
- Access to all sites (optional): requested only when you first use the Pro features "ZIP" (to fetch the files you selected from the sites that host them) or "All tabs" (to read your other open tabs). You can remove this access at any time on Gleaner's Settings page.
- api.gumroad.com: to check your license key with Gumroad, as described under Payments. Gleaner reads nothing on this site.
What Gleaner does not do
- No analytics, tracking, advertising or fingerprinting.
- No collection of your browsing history or the content of the pages you visit.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone.
- No remotely loaded code: everything Gleaner runs ships inside the extension.
The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
Gleaner is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. A change that affects how your data is handled will also be mentioned in the extension's release notes.
